Spring is just around the corner and it’s the perfect time to refresh your home’s exterior. You want to be sure to paint when the temperature outside is nice – not too cold so that the paint adheres properly, but not too hot so that the painting materials get damaged, and you can achieve an even coat.
At Home Painter’s Toronto we have helped with countless home renovations. Most people only think about interior painting when it comes to residential painting, but the outside of your home is just as important, if not more so. But how do you know when it’s time to paint your exterior?
While I don’t think an annual paint job is necessary, most people say that every 5 years is a good time to repaint.
However, there’s no real guideline time-wise, because of the variety of houses and the various climates each house may be exposed to. As a general rule, homes made out of cedar or wood will require new paint every three to seven years, while the newer siding materials need painting every 10 to 15 years. Of course, if your house is brick, it will really depend on the wear and tear on your house’s trim.
Speaking of wear and tear, in Toronto and the GTA we get the whole gamut of weather conditions, exposing our homes to deterioration.
The harsher the climate, the more often you’ll have to paint. With the winter we’ve had, it might be a good time to renew your home’s outer shell. Inspect your home for dirt and mildew, rotten wood, and any chipped or cracked paint, as this can allow moisture to penetrate the wood.
Painting is the most inexpensive remodel for your property and it will automatically add value to your home.
You don’t want to wait too long before repainting your home; the prep becomes more difficult, making the job becoming more expensive, and it’s harder to guarantee the quality of the final repaint.
