With thawing, visually inspecting your roof will give you a clear idea of the condition of your roof and the work to be done on it. As the saying goes, prevention is better than healing, so here are the different points to watch out for on your roof.
The shingles on your roof
A shingle is a small coating element that protects roofs and facades from the elements. For roofing, asphalt shingles tend to wear over time and weather conditions. You will need to observe if shingles are broken or warped if some shingles have raised corners. How are the nails? Do you see any nails that appear to be loose or visible? The ridge is the upper meeting line of two sides of your roof. It allows these two parts to be joined and ensures that the roof covering is watertight. Look at the ridge, does it look damaged?
The flashing is a part that is used to ensure water tightness at different points in a structure. On a roof, the flashing can be installed around a chimney to protect it from rain or snow. Are there any rusty or damaged flashings? Do some flashings seem to you to be loose? Do you see cracked sealing joints or a lack of sealant? If so, you will need to make some repairs to your roof.
The attic is the whole made up of the frame and the roof. This is the space under the roof, the interior volume bounded by the roof slopes and the last floor.
Do you see any signs of water infiltration through the cover? Are the soffits blocked? It is advisable to check roof vents, soffits or fans to make sure dirt or materials do not block them.
Gutters are used to collect rainwater at the base of a roof’s slopes. They can be clogged by leaves, attacked by rust or detached. Remember to check it by climbing a ladder.
Bridging is the wooden support for the roof covering. It is usually made of board or plywood. If you can see ripples on its surface, it is weakened. If some parts of the surface are soft, the wood is rotten, so it will have to be replaced in part or entirely.
