A sleek, rustic-looking stained door is truly something for the eye to behold. Paint certainly allows for more customization and color, a stained front door is in a category all its own. Of course, a stained front door does require repairs and maintenance from time to time and it’s always better to do it sooner rather than later. If you need a reliable contractor to re-stain and re-finish your wood front door, then you should know that Home Painters is always up for the task!
Why You Should Re-finish and Re-stain Your Front Door
There’s a lot of Wear-and-Tear
Re-staining your front door is a job that you have to complete at least once every two years in order to maintain its perfect, even appearance. Many homeowners, however, neglect this task and until there are clear, visible problems, such as peeling, cracking, and having the wood partially or completely exposed. When your door suffers from these issues, you should re-finish and re-stain it as soon as possible to prevent even more, bigger problems from occurring.
You Want a New Look
Your tastes change. Even if the stain on your front door is in fine condition, you may want to consider re-staining if you aren’t a big fan of the shade or finish it’s dressed in currently. If you want to re-stain your door so that it’s darker or lighter, redder or browner, we can help you create a wood front door that is unique and compliments the rest of your home’s exterior.
You Don’t Want to Replace it
There are many reasons why exterior front door re-staining & re-finishing is better than replacing it completely. For starters, re-finishing is often the cheaper option, even if the damage is drastic. It’s also a nice idea to keep your front door and refinish it if it’s particularly old and is the original door of the home. So long as the wood isn’t rotten, you can re-finish and re-stain your door and forget about having to remove it and finding a new one.
You Want Your Door to be Different from Your Neighbours’
In a world of brightly painted front metal doors, let yours stand out. While it may be popular to have a fun red or cool purple door, nothing can beat the look of stained wood. If you want your home to look unique when compared to the others on the block, you can’t go wrong with re-finishing and re-staining your door.
Do you like to bring extra money from the sale of your home, re-finishing and re-staining your front door is a great, cost-effective idea. The money you spend to complete this project will be marginal in relation to the amount that you earn later. Newly stained door is guaranteed to increase the curb appeal of your home, so why not reap the benefits and get started?
The Home Painters’ Guide to Re-finishing and Re-staining Doors
〉Choose the Technique
At Home Painters, we believe that you should always have the final say. We are capable of staining doors while they are both on and off their hinges. After letting you in on the possible negatives and positives of each re-finishing technique, we’ll let you choose which one works best for you and your home. No matter which one you pick, you will receive a hard-working, passionate crew and beautiful, newly-stained wood front door.
〉Preparing to Work
After more than 30 years in business, we know – without a doubt – that it always pays to be prepared. We don’t plan on making any mistakes or messes, but they do happen. That’s why we take the time to protect you and your property by laying down drop sheets to catch dripping stain and applying tape to prevent us from accidentally staining the hinges or trim. Of course, we’re fully licensed and insured so that you won’t have to worry if our workers injures themselves or cause any damage while re-finishing and re-staining your door. We’ve got you covered!
〉Repairing the Damage
Even if you’ve taken good care of your front door in the past, there’s always something that can be fixed up in the re-finishing process. We’ll start the job by stripping off the previous coat of varnish that is peeling up and flaking and then sand down the surface so that the stain goes on a smoothly as possible. Sanding will also get rid of blisters and other light imperfections; big holes and dents, however, will have to be filled in with a wood epoxy before we can continue. As soon as your door is in tip-top shape, we’ll give it a wipe-down and then finally start to re-stain it.
〉Applying Sealer, Stain, and Varnish
When you paint a front door, you apply a primer first. When you apply stain, however, things are a little different. Prior to staining, we will put on a coat of sealer to protect the wood from issues such as water damage and rot. Once that’s dry, we will begin to apply the stain. We’ll likely need to do two coats, so this can be a long process. After the first coat, we’ll allow 24 hours of drying time before applying the second one. Of course, we’ll need another 24 hours to let the second coat dry before we finish it off with a clear-coat of varnish, and yet another day to allow for that to dry before your door is completely re-finished.
