Our Proven Interior Stained Wood Painting Process

Painting over stained wood or gumwood requires expertise. Here’s how we do it:

1. Clean the Surface

We wash wood with TSP or Simple Green (Sherwin-Williams) to remove dirt, polish, and oil buildup. Rinse and let dry completely.

2. Scuff Sand

Lightly sand with 180–220 grit to dull the sheen. not strip it. Wipe away dust with a tack cloth or microfiber rag.

3. Degloss (Optional)

For glossy finishes or shellac coatings, we use liquid deglosser to ensure maximum adhesion.

4. Prime Properly

Apply a bonding or stain-blocking primer:

  • For bleed-through: BIN Shellac-Based Primer
  • For adhesion: STIX or Insl-X Bonding Primer
(Allow proper drying – BIN: 15–30 min; Bonding Primer: 3–4 hrs.)

5. Light Sand Again

Once dry, we lightly sand with 220 grit to smooth the surface and clean off any remaining dust.

6. Topcoat Application

We use two coats of premium enamel for flawless results:

  • Benjamin Moore Advance
  • Benjamin Moore Scuff-X
  • Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Enamel

7. Cure Time

We recommend 7–14 days before heavy use or cleaning to allow paint to fully harden.

Frequently Asked Questions about Painting Over Stained Wood and Gumwood

Can I paint over stained wood without sanding?

Painting over stained wood and gumwood without sanding is absolutely possible, but it all comes down to the right prep and products. Light sanding or deglossing gives much better adhesion and smoother results, we always include it.

Yes, you can paint over stained wood if it’s thoroughly cleaned, lightly sanded, and primed. Applying a good stain-blocking or bonding primer makes the new paint adhere and avoids bleed-through.

Good-quality enamel or latex paint is a good choice once the surface is primed and prepped. Paints such as Benjamin Moore Advance or Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Enamel provide a smooth, hard finish.

It’s not advisable. Primer prevents the stain from coming through, stops discoloration, and provides a surface for paint to cling to. Omitting primer usually results in peeling or patchy color.

Not exactly. The stain needs to be cleaned, deglossed, and primed beforehand. Good prep will make your paint stick and last for many years without chipping.

For bleed-through, we utilize BIN Shellac-Based Primer. For varnished or slick surfaces, STIX Bonding Primer is best.

You will still see a subtle wood texture if that is what you prefer, but the color will be even and uniform.

Painting is significantly less expensive and preserves your home’s original woodwork.

Prepped and primed properly, painted wood can last 10+ years with little upkeep.

The price depends on surface area, condition, and preparation requirements. Small trim or door work can begin at a couple of hundred dollars, while complete gumwood conversions are more expensive. A free estimate guarantees fair pricing for your home.
