Cost-Saving Window Wood Repair
North York
Project Overview:
Wood Repair to Preserve Original Windows
This home needed wood repair on several window sills, trim, and other details on the front, sides, and back. The client wanted to keep the original windows and avoid the cost of full wood replacement. Home Painters Toronto was hired for targeted window wood repair and a fresh paint finish to bring everything back to life. The goal was simple: make the windows strong again, improve their look, and keep costs under control
Window Wood Repair
The Challenge
Once work started, it became clear the damage was much bigger than it looked, with more than ten windows and sills showing rotting wood that needed urgent repair. One interior library window no longer worked at all, and the back door handles were loose. On top of that, the team had to work carefully around tight garden spaces with ladders and drop cloths.
Key challenges included:
- Hidden rot that went beyond the original estimate.
- A non-working interior window that needed to be sealed and fixed.
- Wobbly door handles that let in drafts.
- Complex angles and limited space because of landscaping.
The Result
Home Painters Toronto handled rotting wood repair in over a dozen areas, making the windows solid and functional again. The interior library window was turned into a fixed unit by removing its latches and mechanisms and refinishing the trim. The back door handles were tightened to stop drafts. All this work was finished with a full two-coat paint system.
By choosing window repair, the client saved more than $100,000 compared to replacing all the windows. For under $10,000, they extended the life of their windows by another 7–10 years.
Scope of Work
Step 1: Inspect and remove rotting wood on 9–10 window sills and trim
- Scrape and dig out rot.
- Apply epoxy wood filler.
- Smooth and sand to match the original surface.
Step 2: Wood replacement and repair trim on front library window
- Remove rotted trim near the glass with care.
- Pause if needed to avoid glass damage.
- Install new trim and caulk shut.
Step 3: Repair bay window trim (2 back windows)
- Replace rotting wood trim pieces on the outer and inner areas.
- Rebuild 90° corners with epoxy where needed.
Step 4: Convert inside library window (non-operational)
- Remove locks and crank mechanisms.
- Fill, sand, and finish to mimic a fixed window.
Step 5: Stabilize inside back door handles
- Secure loose hardware.
- Ensure a tight fit to block drafts.
Step 6: Preparation and painting (exterior)
- Protect gardens, porch, and patio with drop sheeting and plastic.
- Store ladders at the back to prevent theft.
- Scrape, sand, fill, caulk, and prime all areas.
- Apply two coats of paint:
- Back doors/windows: Sherwin-Williams SW 7663 Monorail Silver, exterior latex satin.
- Front frames: custom non-faded match, latex Solo semi-gloss.
- All white areas: Cloud White, latex flat.

BEFORE AND AFTER

Timeline & Outcome
The job began with a careful inspection. As more rot was uncovered, the team adjusted their plan to cover all the hidden damage. What was first expected to be a quick project grew into a ten-day job because of the extra repairs, tight angles, and the interior window conversion. Throughout the process, the crew kept communication with the client clear and steady.
By focusing on rotting wood repair instead of full wood replacement,, the client kept costs under $10,000 and gained years of extra life from their existing windows. The end result was a clean, strong finish and a happy homeowner.
