1. How much does it cost to stain brick?
The cost of brick staining, if you choose to go with a professional painting company, should include, materials and labour. Some factors can affect such as how much texture there is in the bricks or stones since it will increase the time spent painting and the amount of paint used. Height and difficulty to reach are other factors that can influence the final price but most importantly, the total square footage.

2. Can brick be stained?
If your bricks have not been painted or stained before, you can 100% stain your bricks! If you’re unsure, simply do the quick water splash test. If the brick absorbs the water, it can be stained. If the water does not absorb and beads down the wall, it cannot be stained.
Not only does brick staining work to maintain the original aesthetics of the home and architecture, but it’s healthier for the brick itself, more cost-effective in the long run.
What’s the difference between brick staining and painting?
Brick staining is actually better for the health of the bricks themselves as the stain allows them to breathe. If you go with brick stain, it rarely fades over time as the stain basically becomes a part of the brick. Brick stain doesn’t simply cover the brick like paint does, but it fully adheres and becomes a permanent fixture.
3. Does brick staining last?
Since brick staining becomes part of your brick and allows it to breathe, it won’t peel, bubble or blister. For that reason, most manufacturers guarantee it for 15 years. Still, based on our experience, we’ve never seen a brick staining job need maintenance in over 30 years that we’ve been in business; on the other hand, brick painting normally needs a retouch every 10-15 years; it could be sooner, depending on the weather conditions the walls are exposed to.
So, if you ask us what’s better, staining your bricks or painting your bricks, the answer is 100%, go for brick staining if you can.
4. Can you stain in a lighter colour?
Staining bricks can go both ways, from dark to light or from light to dark.
The implications? If you’re going from a very dark colour to a very light one (and sometimes vice versa) you will probably need more than 2 coats which can increase the price. Another thing to look for is if you want a semi-transparent, it will be more difficult to do it with this type of paint since it’s the main characteristic of semi-transparent is that it will not cover 100% so, going in opposite directions can be more challenging. In other words, if you’re going for a solid colour, everything is possible.
