Vinyl is a very popular product for home exteriors. Unfortunately, sometimes the popularity does not help, considering vinyl fades over time when exposed to light. Fear not though, a coat of paint is all you need to give your vinyl some life. While knowing the paint color is important, choosing the right paint for vinyl is a necessity. Vinyl is a plastic product used for home siding, couches, and fence overs. In addition, it is highly resistant to most types of paint, because it is a plastic material. With all that being said, what exactly is the right paint for vinyl siding and vinyl in general?

Acrylic Paint For Vinyl Siding
Paints that are specifically meant for vinyl are 100 percent acrylic-based or use urethane. For paint companies, they label it as “exterior paint.” In terms of paint for vinyl siding, color is an important decision to make because darker colors absorb more heat than lighter shades. In addition, vinyl siding expands with temperature. This means that the added pressure of heat causes the paint to peel off at a quick rate. Using an exterior paint in a lighter shade can prevent the paint from peeling off.
Preparation is key
Like everything else you want to achieve in your life, preparation is vital. It is the same thing when it comes to paint for vinyl siding. If your surface is dirty, the paint will not stick. Whatever surface you’re painting, make sure your vinyl is clean before you apply paint. To make sure it is clean, you can use soap with water and rinse well. When the vinyl surface is clean, the primer and paint will stick, unlike it would if the surface is filled with dirt. This will make sure that your vinyl is not only clean, but will last a long time.
Painting Flexible Vinyl
This is used to cover multiple surfaces and can be purchased in many different colors. When you want to change up the look of your house, without changing your vinyl, a brand new color is all you need. With the right application methods and paint, your vinyl siding will end up with great results. This task is easy and not that difficult. The materials you will need: masking tape, paint, spray gun, and lacquer thinner. Acrylic paint works best for flexible vinyl because they adhere to the material better than other types of paint, without the effects of cracking and peeling. Urethane acrylic paint works well also. To avoid any skin irritation, it is important to paint in a ventilated area and to wear protective gear. This includes wearing gloves and safety goggles (if needed).
Let’s start painting the vinyl siding!
- First step is to stir the can of paint properly. You will need to also clean the paint sprayer equipment well. Pour the paint into it.
- Put the spray nozzle strength on the maximum level, which is approximately between 25 to 30 psi (pound per square inch). Test the spray gun on a small area first, to see if it works. If it does in fact work, you can start to use various strokes of thin coating.
- Spray 6 to 8 inches away from the surface using very slow strokes. Then, apply 2 to 4 mist coats of about 15 minutes in waiting time between each one for drying purposes. Do not apply thick coats because the paint will not set correctly, which would be a waste of your time and energy.
- Lastly, after applying all the layers of paint, let it dry for about one day. To protect the color and surfaces, use a plastic sealant.
- Yay! Your vinyl looks great and is ready to go.
Paint for vinyl siding
The best paint for vinyl is 100% acrylic paint, especially when painting vinyl siding. It provides top notch adhesion because it sticks to the vinyl easier, while having long lasting results. Also, it is an easy and affordable way to give the exterior of your home a boost. Curb appeal is important when the public pass by your home. When your home has a refreshed look, people will notice. If the paint you choose is darker than your current vinyl, you do not need to use a primer. Oppositely, if the paint you choose is not dark, a surface primer is recommended for good results. Lastly, painting your vinyl can help protect it when the weather conditions get harsh.
