What Kind of Paint Do You Use on Exterior Vinyl Siding?

The most important thing to remember when painting vinyl siding is that you need to use paint that is specifically designed for exterior use. The reason why this is such an important rule of thumb is that regular interior paints do not have the proper ingredients to protect against UV rays and moisture.

This means that you will need to use high-quality exterior paint that is specifically designed for use on vinyl siding. These paints are usually made with 100% acrylic paint for vinyl siding or vinyl base, which provide superior UV protection and durability. This is the best paint for vinyl siding, but you can also use high-quality latex paint if it is specifically designed for exterior use.

The best brands on the market are Behr, Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin Williams vinyl siding paint.

Vinyl Siding Paint Colour Ideas

When you are choosing vinyl siding paint colours, you should take into consideration the style of your home and what colours would look good. You may want to pick a similar colour or one that contrasts with the rest of your exterior.

Some of the best vinyl exterior colours to consider include white, beige, grey and brown. You can also choose a light blue or green if you want to add a little colour to your property without making it look too bold.

When choosing the colour of your exterior paint, it is important to remember that different colours reflect light differently. If you want something that will conceal stains or blemishes on your vinyl siding then a dark gray or black will work best. However, if you want something that really pops then try using white or bright colours instead!

Steps on Painting Your Vinyl Exterior Siding On A House:

1. Plan for Vinyl Exterior Siding Painting

  • After you have prepped the exterior of your house for painting, you are ready to begin painting your vinyl siding! Plan out the day you paint your house with the weather in mind.
  • Spring is a great time to update and refresh the exterior vinyl siding of your house but this season comes with unpredictable weather changes like the snowstorm that happened mid-April this year!
  • So be sure to plan for a day that is partly cloudy but with no chance of rain or snow to give you great results. You don’t want to overheat in the sun but you also want your vinyl siding to dry as quickly as possible before the weather changes again. Read our blog about Best Time to Paint House.
  • Pick the part of the house exterior that you want to paint first; this part of the house is usually where the sun will shine last during the day so that you can be ahead of the rays when you move onto the other areas of your house.
  • Make sure that you have selected the right paint for exterior vinyl painting and have all your materials handy before you begin. This will make it possible for you to apply coats evenly without patches and to get through the project quicker. Choose the right exterior paint type and the perfect colour to match your house.
  • Seal off any areas around the window trim, door frame etc. with painter’spainters’ tape so that you don’t accidentally slop the paint over it. This will allow clean and neat application and a more professional-looking paint application.

2. Prime and Paint the Vinyl Siding

  • When you are ready to begin painting, start off by laying a drop cloth around the ground over any flowerbeds or floor surfaces that you do not want the paint to get on.
  • Prime and leave on for about an hour before you begin painting. Dust off the external surface that you have painted and then start to paint the first coat. Apply paint smoothly and use your roller in long swooping strokes, starting from the bottom and moving upward.
  • When using the paintbrush for the areas where a paint roller may not be able to provide as much attention to detail, jab paint into the paintbrush joints and smooth out the paint to seal it. You may also want to consider using a corner roller to get at those harder-to-reach spaces.
  • You can use an airless paint sprayer (read our blog to learn how to use it )  and master the finishing touches flawlessly. An airless sprayer will take getting used to, so practice beforehand on a scrap surface. Paint about a 3-foot horizontal strip at a time, then release the trigger and drop down to paint another strip of the same length. You will overlap the first paint strip by one-third to one-half.
  • Prime and Paint the Vinyl siding

3. Examine and Allow To Dry

  • Examine the painted exterior vinyl siding to be sure the entire surface receives an equal amount of paint. Too much paint will cause dripping and running, and too little paint on the exteriors will show the old paint through it. If you find any problem with the paint distribution be sure to use an upward tilt with the airless sprayer and make any necessary touching up with a corner roller or paint brush
  • Let dry for at least 24 hours, and check over the surface for any imperfections. When it is completely dry, remove the painter’s tape carefully.

HINTS:

• Plan painting on higher places in horizontal sections along the top of the exterior vinyl siding wall. Don’t lean away from the ladder or reach any higher than arm’s length to either side.

• Paint one high section, move the ladder, and paint another section. Repeat this process across the exterior wall of your house and lower the ladder when starting on a lower section.

• Try to hang your paint can on a rung with an S-Shape bucket hook so you’ll be able to hold onto the ladder while painting with the other. You should always have one hand on the ladder while painting the vinyl siding on your house.

• Keep in mind that vinyl siding can expand and contract in colder weather. This is something to remember while painting so that you save the same paint you used to touch up any areas where there may be a slight gap in the future.

• It is recommended to use an airless sprayer for the final coat to add a flawless finishing touch. However, if you are really experienced with an airless sprayer you could use it to paint the entire house without needing to use a roller first.

With these 3 steps on how to paint your external vinyl siding, you’ll be able to move on with other projects around your home and enjoy your freshly painted siding!
